Hi, I’m Brittany with Dawg Boss Dog Training, and today, we’re tackling one of our biggest challenges yet. We’ve partnered with a local animal shelter to create a training program that will continue benefiting these dogs long after my team and I are gone. Our mission is clear: to teach these dogs the behaviors they need to find forever homes.
Every shelter faces the heartbreaking reality of being full to the brim with dogs who, despite their potential, struggle to find homes due to behavior issues. These dogs aren’t inherently bad; they just haven’t learned how to walk on a leash, live in a house, or behave in ways that potential adopters expect. That’s where we come in.
Today, we’re at the Colonial Heights Animal Shelter, working alongside their dedicated staff to bring structure and training to these dogs’ lives. We’re excited about the difference we can make, and I encourage you to stick around to see the incredible tools and programs we’re implementing to change the lives of these dogs—and the staff who care for them.
Most of the dogs here aren’t bad dogs at all; they simply haven’t had the chance to learn good behavior. Shelter workers do their absolute best, but without the right tools and knowledge, they’re often unable to help these dogs reach their full potential. We’re here to fill that gap, helping to stop the cycle of bad behavior that keeps dogs stuck in shelters.
Today, we face two significant challenges: unpredictable weather and an understaffed shelter—there are only two people working today when there should be more. Despite this, we’re determined to pull as many dogs as possible, write out a comprehensive program for the staff to follow, and teach them how to use the tools necessary to train these dogs effectively.
It’s no secret that many of these dogs are in the shelter because their previous homes failed them. Whether due to ignorance or neglect, these dogs were let down, and now they’re stuck in the system. Getting out is tough, but we’re here to help. By training the shelter staff and providing the dogs with the skills they need, we’re working to break the cycle of dogs being returned to the shelter due to behavior issues.
At the heart of this effort is the belief that every dog deserves a chance to succeed in a home. By going to the root of the problem—the dogs in the shelter—we can help more dogs find their forever families. And that’s why we’re here today: to ensure that these dogs, and the staff who care for them, have the tools and knowledge to make that happen.
