What Is Temperament Testing?

Breeding temperament testing is an important part of the dog breeding process and is regularly implemented by respectable breeders. For adult dogs, it’s used to determine their suitability for breeding. Any potential genetic or behavioral issues that may be passed down to future generations can be identified at this point. For puppies, this kind of testing is to ensure they’ll thrive in their future homes. It’s important to note all this testing is done in tandem with veterinarian care and genetic testing to make sure both adult dogs and litters are healthy and good candidates for breeding.

What kinds of tests are there?

  • Socialization Tests – An evaluation of the dog’s response to new people, animals and environments.
  • Sensitivity Tests – An evaluation of the dog’s response to sudden movements or unexpected stimuli.
  • Aggression Tests – An evaluation of the dog’s response to a potential threat, such as dominant displays or food guarding.
  • Trainability Tests – An evaluation of the dog’s ability to learn and follow commands.
  • Stability Tests – An evaluation of the dog’s level of nervousness or anxiety in different situations.
